Give Us A Twirl
NO SQUIRRELS WERE HARMED DURING THE MAKING OF THIS POST!
Tentative approach..
“Ooohh..”
“I’m sure this didn’t happen yesterday..”
Head tucked in is good..
Because as soon as there’s a wobble..
The spin isn’t as fast as the images suggest.
The bottom of the feeder is less than a metre from the ground and the surface below is soft soil.
The squirrels show absolutely no sign of distress, most of the time they jump straight back up for another go..!!
WOW! It works…..brilliant!xxxx
At least they can’t nibble while they’re twirling..
An amusement park for the critters 🙂
Inadvertently, I do seem to have created one!
Brilliant! I’ve been waiting for this post all week. Love the fact they get straight back on again. They’ll probably tell all their friends and you’ll end up with a garden full of squirrels queuing to have a go.
Then they will all have to chip in to pay for the batteries..
That is just as fantastic as I’d hoped. What fabulous pictures. You should send them to the manufacturers!
I have to say, it lived up to my expectations too.. the jury’s still out on whether it works, but it is funny..
I Love it!! I laughed so hard that tears popped out off my eyes as I spewed coffee across my desk!
Hello Dee and welcome to rusty duck!
I still laugh every time I look at those photos. They are almost better than watching the real thing!
I have been reading for a long time, not really a lurker…I don’t have my own blog and leaving a comment is often like the swirling squirrel ride for the commenter!
We’re a friendly lot and you really are very welcome on board Dee. It’s great to hear what you think!
The Mission Impossible of the squirrel world! The twirly feeder seems to up to the job, Jessica!
Don’t speak too soon, they WILL be working on how to break it..
A squirrel-y Disneyland!!!! (Dizzyland, maybe!) Priceless!!!
They will definitely have to pay an entrance fee..
I’m smiling a lot here. Thank you!
The birds all sit and watch from the surrounding trees. I think they are smiling too!
Hilarious!
It must have been invented by a long suffering bird feeder..
Those photos made me laugh so much the whole family had to come and see what I was laughing at! Julie x
It’s the sense of movement that the camera captures. I’m still going to try a video, but I can’t help feeling that the still photos will be just as funny.
I love this. The feeder is a success! Now I wonder how long these squirrels will keep coming back. It’s a shame they all look so alike; so you won’t know if it is different squirrels trying it out or the same one coming back for another ride.
I can hear the twirler working as I type.. I’d guess it’s a new squirrel. It fell off well short of the current endurance record!
Is it a bird, is it a plane – no it’s super squirrel!
Certainly their tenacity has no bounds.
I had a feeling that they might enjoy it! How much are you charging per ride or twirl? It’s got to be worth a peanut or two:)
Perhaps they will get bored when the novelty wears off??
YOUR BEST PHOTOS YET…..WONDERFUL JESS
Thank you John!
It’s almost worth rewarding them with a peanut or two, just for the entertainment value they provide !
Awesome shots !
~Jo
And I suppose they do deserve it for their perseverance!
I’ve been popping in frequently, hoping you’d catch an ‘action shot’ but this is beyond my wildest dreams! We don’t have squirrels in New Zealand so they are just “cute furry creatures” to us – but I can see how much of a pest they must be to you. Do they also carry diseases? Our possums carry very nasty bovine TB so are a major menace to the farming folk. I love reading of your exploits. I meant to congratulate the Master Plumber for his success recently! More than I’d dare let my husband attempt!
Hi Virginia, and welcome to rusty duck!
I’m not sure if they carry disease, but they can be extremely destructive, stripping bark from trees and attacking birds’ nests. I like to put out food for the birds but the squirrels will scoff the lot if they can, destroying expensive feeders in the process. They are endearing though, it has to be said, intelligent and fun loving. I’m convinced they deliberately goad Mike into chasing them down the garden with the water pistol!
It’s badgers that carry bovine TB here, leading to a proposal to cull them, very controversial.
I’m still laughing!
🙂
I’m going to be giggling all day! Amazing images of the best ride at the fair 😉
I have a feeling I’ve shot myself in the foot.. the idea was to make our feeder LESS desirable..
Thanks Rose 🙂
Brilliant shots.
They could be queuing up soon for goes on the ’roundabout’ 🙂
It is going to cost me a fortune in batteries!!
Do you remember those rather louche young men who were in charge of the fairground waltzers when we were young? And how nonchalantly they rode the ups and downs without holding on? I think your twirling squirrels will end up with that attitude – coolly feeding as they whizz round…..
I do remember.
It’s when the squirrels turn up wearing sunglasses that we have to worry..
Ah hahaha….They’ll be using it as a spin dryer when it’s rained you know! ” Does my fur look good on this?” Anthropomorphing!
I could set up a beauty salon. Dip in the river and blow dry. Fairly priced (to cover the cost of the batteries). Perhaps I’d better not put Mike in charge of the river dip bit though..
Curly whirlies! You’re having so much fun with this!
Not just me 🙂
But did they manage to steal a few nuts?
A few, which I think they deserve to be fair!
Oh, thank you, but did you intend to supply the local squirrel population with a new ‘Alton Towers’ adventure, and not even charge admission for it?!
I didn’t think they’d take to it quite as much as they have!!
Fantastic!!!!!
It has been quite amusing I have to confess..!
It works. I’m sure the money you save on bird food will offset the cost of the batteries.
That’s a good point Jo..
Hilarious! They may look cute but they’re dangerous vandals. We had a couple in our loft and they ripped out a sizeable amount of our insulation and started chewing our electric cables! M x
Eeeek!
See, I told you twirling was a squirrel parlous game!
Oops! Parlour game … but parlous might cover it too. A parlous parlour game … ooh, the thrills!
You were right.. on both counts!!!
hehee I’m so dizzy that would be hilarious to watch in real time
It is! The twirler does actually work, but even if it didn’t the entertainment value would be worth it in itself! Those squirrels are so determined to hang on. But, we have new batteries fitted and I am standing by with the video camera..
