OK, Onwards..
What do we have here?
The splodgy bits are knotting solution. It’s stuff that seals the knots in the wood, preventing the brown stains that can sometimes seep through the layers of paint. We seem to have a lot of wood. And knots.
Mike has drilled the holes for the adjustable shelf supports.
The jig is a recent purchase. No job can start without a few new toys to help it on its way, but in this case it has proved invaluable. Drilling all those little holes, the exact same distance apart, would have taken weeks without it. The trouble is I’m told the drill is now on its way out too..
And this is where we are as of today.
The two remaining back pieces still need to be prepared. And the lid. 25 individual shelf sections have been knotted and sanded too. Gosh. It’ll soon be ready for the spray booth..
I’d forgotten about knotting solution, I seem to remember it stained my hands! Looking good though, you have been busy! J x
It does. Mike had to go out and get more meths. It’s the only thing that gets it off!
I made the mistake of not using knotting when painting our new window sills….I am now paying the price. Lovely to see your Christmas tree in the context of the room. It looks great, as do the (potential) shelves.

Looking good! The knotting solution makes the wood look animal print. You could set a new trend (or maybe ‘knot’)!!!

The spray booth is also known as the garage. Hopefully with the car well out of the way…
Malcolm is suffering “tool envy” …… he doesn’t have a drilling jig thingy! (that could be the only tool he doesn’t have!) I’m looking forward to seeing the progress of the shelves.
He had fun with it.. but not sure what else you’d use it for? I shall start a tool hire business at the end of all this..

25 boxes full of books, at least. I shall have a bookcase AND the dining room back!

I meant what colour! I know its the shelves DOH.
Farrow and Ball’s Parma Gray. Blue/grey. We did a bathroom in that colour in the last house and loved it.

I put that body cream on one summer – the one which slowly tints you ( orange ) My fingers looked like I had a fifty a day habit !

Hi Jessica – I immediately recognised the unmistakeable pattern of the knotting solution from your picture even before I read your words! We have just been checking our tin at the cottage last weekend as we have to replace the conservatory doors soon as the wet panel on the existing doors has grown a mushroom fungus thingy… Yuck!!
You seem to have dived straight in now Christmas is over and the shelves look great – do you loan your better half out any time with his tools??

I am going to be so jealous of the after photo of those book shelves. My books are all over the place!
I just hope we’ve got room for them all… I’d hate to have to do this all over again somewhere else.. Even if we do now have the jig!
Slowly but surely you are getting there. What will you have to blog about when all the jobs are finished? You’ll just have to move house and start again I reckon.
Only just scratched the surface Elaine, sadly. And then there’s the garden… Ten year job I reckon!
And there was me wailing about the upheaval of turning the storeroom into my studio – hardly any power tools required – and you’re cracking on with an entire house! Have fun!!

I can already imagine those wonderful shelves filled to overflowing with colourful books, and carefully chosen what-nots…..It’s all coming together nicely, you get full marks !
