A few days ago our neighbour, Trevor, mentioned that he had read an article suggesting that increased life expectancy (90 years of age and beyond) can be attained by drinking five or six glasses of wine a day. And on that basis would we like to stop by that evening for a drink, or several?
I was sceptical at the time. All that I had read on the subject suggested that five or six glasses of wine a day would do nothing other than guarantee a one way ticket to a Liver Unit. So I was interested to see, on the BBC website yesterday, that a related study does indeed exist, but with the caveat that it had actually been conducted on worms, not humans.
Am I the only person to wonder, in this age of cuts and austerity, how on earth someone gets funding for looking into the effect of alcohol on worms?
